SA Trio

Monday 7th October, 2013

1pm, SIA Theatre

Sa() embodies the spirit of three unique Chinese individuals, influenced by diverse cultures from today’s cosmopolitan society and globalized world, yet retaining their Chinese ethnic identities. The trio, driven by passion and united through their zest for experimentation, honours their tradition while pursuing modern sonic experiences. Featuring original compositions inspired by their cultural roots and realized through modern interpretations, the trio hopes to create Musical Art that represents their modern identity as Chinese from a diaspora.

Sa (), which means ‘three of us’ in Northern Chinese dialect, depicts the coming together of three musicians united by their passion for music and breaking new grounds. Though the instrumental trio is predominantly Chinese in nature, with versatile musicians Andy C. on the Dizi (Chinese flute), Natalie Alexandra on the Guzheng (Chinese zither) and Cheryl Ong on drums and percussion, their music expands on their traditional Chinese roots, while creatively infusing modern elements with a tasteful use of electronics.

The trio made its debut appearance at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre in celebration of National Day 2011, and more recently at the Sub-station, collaborating with drummer Darren Moore as part of the ‘Tribal Gathering of Tongue Tasters’ Series. They have also been invited to perform in various cultural events such as ‘Temasya Kampong Glam 2011’ and ‘Forever Sarong Kebaya’ at the Peranakan Museum.

As the pioneer Musical Art group to expand on traditional roots through the use of modern technology, the trio hopes to share their interpretations of traditional roots with you without losing touch of current times, bringing you on their journey of self-discovery through music.
